Innovation drives progress, and Hewlett Packard Labs drives innovation

At Hewlett Packard Labs, we are focused on transfer of advanced technologies into next-generation products and solutions. We work in collaboration with HPE business groups and our research partners to deliver innovation that propels our growth, creates competitive advantage, and provides industry leadership.

What we do

We are charged with solving some of the most complex challenges for Hewlett Packard Enterprise businesses. These inventions will dramatically improve tomorrow’s products and solutions. Labs works hand-in-hand with HPE’s businesses, bringing our innovation roadmaps together with our business roadmaps, integrating key technologies into our products, and accelerating how we drive technology from R&D to commercialization.

Executive Biography

Ray Beausoleil

HPE Senior Fellow, Senior Vice President and Director of Large-Scale Integrated Photonics Lab

Ray Beausoleil leads the Large-Scale Integrated Photonics Lab at Hewlett Packard Labs, where he is responsible for research on the applications of optics at the micro/nanoscale to high performance classical and quantum information processing. His current projects include photonic interconnects for exascale computing, low-power complex nanophotonic circuits, new computing technologies, and mode-locked semiconductor lasers. He and his team have developed new hardware licensing and product development models that convert research into revenue with substantial reductions in R&D investment.

Beausoleil joined Hewlett Packard Labs in 1996 after serving as an officer or director of R&D at three small companies in the laser and computer industries. Among his other accomplishments, he invented the optical paper-navigation algorithms incorporated into the HP/Agilent optical mouse and now used in the Great Wall and Golden Gate DesignJet large-format printers.

An adjunct professor of applied physics at Stanford University, he is a Fellow of both the Optical Society of America and the American Physical society, and he received the 2016 APS Distinguished Lectureship on the Applications of Physics "for his sustained, groundbreaking work in photonics and optics, especially applied to the integration of optical and electronic computing and information processing." Beausoleil received his B.Sc. (with Honors) in physics from the California Institute of Technology and both M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in physics from Stanford University.
