The leap second
The leap second is a one-second adjustment that is occasionally applied to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) in order to compensate for the Earth's slowing rotation. There were close to 26 leap seconds added since 1972. The last one happened on 30 June 2015 at 23:59:60 UTC and a similar leap second will be added this year at the end of 31 December 2016 at 23:59:60 UTC.
