Creating a volume using HPE StoreEasy management console

There are two methods to create a volume:
  1. Use HPE recommended: It is pre-configured default settings in Volume properties (Drive protection failure, File system, allocation unit, deduplication mode, and so on). A user can create a volume using these settings. It doesn't allow the user to edit Volume properties.

  2. Edit Settings: It allows user to create customized volume by editing volume properties.

Prerequisites

Make sure to close Smart Storage Administrator GUI and CLI before creating volume using HPE StoreEasy management console.

Procedure (using HPE recommended)
  1. Select Volumes from the left navigation menu. The Volumes page will appears.

  2. Click New Volume. Create a volume page will appear.

  3. Enter the volume name.

  4. Select Enclosure from the drop-down list.

  5. Select the unit of the drive size (GiB, TiB). Then, select drive size by using the following buttons under Usable Volume Capacity option:

    • + button: To increase the drive size.

    • - button: To decrease the drive size.

    • Alternatively, you can also increase or decrease the drive size by clicking on boxes.

  6. Click Create Volume.

NOTE:
Default settings for use HPE recommended tab:
  • Drive failure protection: RAID 6 (RAID 10 for 1460 and 1560 models)

  • File system layout: NTFS

  • Volume drive letter: Available drive letter between D-Z

  • Deduplication: General purpose file server

  • Snapshot schedule: Hourly- from 8 am to 10 pm

  • Snapshot volume space allocation: 10%

Procedure (using Edit Settings)

  1. Select Volumes from the left navigation menu. The Volumes page will appears.

  2. Click New Volume. Create a volume page will appear.

  3. Enter the volume name.

  4. Select Enclosure from the drop-down list.

  5. Select the unit of the drive size (GiB, TiB). Then, select drive size by using the following buttons under Usable Volume Capacity option:

    • + button: To increase the drive size.

    • - button: To decrease the drive size.

    • Alternatively, you can also increase or decrease the drive size by clicking on boxes.

  6. Select RAID level from Drive failure protection drop-down list.

  7. Select Add new drives as hot-spare and then select drives from Select drives to be used as spares drop-down list. You can also select Do not assign hot-spare drive if you do not wish to add hot-spare drive.

    NOTE:

    At least 1 hot spare drive or maximum 2 hot spare drives should be selected for RAID 5. For other RAID levels, hot spare drives are optional.

  8. Select File System, Drive Letter and Allocation Unit.

  9. Select Deduplication mode from the drop-down list.

    NOTE:

    Deduplication mode is disabled if the volume size is 64 Tib or more.

  10. Select the number of days in Files Older Than (in days) field to determine the number of days that must pass before a file becomes eligible for deduplication.

    Files Older Than (in days) field is not visible when deduplication mode is disabled.

  11. Select the custom file extensions to be excluded.

  12. Select Snapshot volume space allocation from drop-down-list.

  13. Select Create Volume.

NOTE:

If user creates a volume using Use HPE recommended tab and select physical drive size that exceeds the usable volume capacity beyond 64TiB, then the control automatically goes to Edit Settings tab from Use HPE recommended tab in Create a volume page.
