What to expect when updating your appliances
HPE Synergy Composer running HPE OneView version 5.20 or earlier versions
Both appliances in a high availability pair are updated to the new version. First the active appliance is updated, and then the standby appliance is updated.
During the update of the active HPE Synergy Composer, the management functions are not available.
After the active appliance completes its update, the active appliance is available while the standby appliance is updated. However, the high availability configuration is restored only after the standby appliance update is complete and the appliance is synchronized. The status of the standby appliance update is shown in the Activity page as an Update appliance task.
If the active appliance cannot be updated, the appliance is returned to the version before the update.
If the standby appliance cannot be updated after the active appliance is updated, the update of the standby appliance is aborted, but the active appliance remains at the updated version, and there is no longer any high availability. To recover from this condition, reimage the standby appliance so that its version matches the active appliance. For instructions on how to reimage the appliance, see Reimage the appliance with the preloaded USB drive or "Reimaging the appliance module with the preloaded USB drive" in the HPE Synergy Appliances Maintenance and Service Guide for HPE Synergy Composer and HPE Synergy Image Streamer.
After the reimaged standby appliance restarts, the appliances synchronize with each other, and high availability is restored.
HPE Synergy Composer running HPE OneView version 5.30 or later versions
Starting with HPE OneView 5.30, first the standby appliance is updated, and then the active appliance is updated. After the standby appliance update is complete, a failover process takes place where the active appliance performs an automatic failover to the standby appliance. After the failover process completes, the new standby (formerly active) appliance is updated.
CAUTION:Appliance management functions are not available during the failover process. The failover process takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.
Once the update and the failover to the standby appliance are successful, you can resume the use of the appliance. High availability configuration is restored once both appliances have completed their updates.
If the standby appliance cannot be updated, the appliance is returned to the version before the update.
After the failover to the updated standby appliance, if the new standby (formerly active) appliance cannot be updated, the update of the standby appliance is aborted, but the active appliance remains at the updated version, and there is no longer any high availability. To recover from this condition, reimage the standby appliance so that its version matches the active appliance. For instructions on how to reimage the appliance, see Reimage the appliance with the preloaded USB drive or "Reimaging the appliance module with the preloaded USB drive" in the HPE Synergy Appliances Maintenance and Service Guide for HPE Synergy Composer and HPE Synergy Image Streamer
After the reimaged standby appliance restarts, the appliance synchronizes with each other, and high availability is restored.
