Remove GPU from Left GPU Sled

Remove left GPU from CS-Storm chassis (GPUs in PCI slot groups 2 and 3).

  • Part Numbers:
    • NVIDIA GPUs: K40, K80, M40, Pascal
    • Xeon Phi Coprocessors: 5110, 7120
  • Time: 20 minutes
  • Tools: Phillips screwdriver
  • The server is removed from the rack and is placed on a stable ESD-safe work surface.

Remove Left GPU Sled, CS-Storm, 00:01:01. This short clip shows how to remove the left GPU sled.

  • The left GPU sled PCI buses connect to motherboard PCI slots 2 and 3 through interface boards (IFBs).
  • Important: NVIDIA M40 and Pascal GP100 GPUs do not fit into the original (first generation) CS-Storm GPU tray assemblies. New (second generation) trays are available for NVIDIA M40 and Pascal GP100 GPUs. NVIDIA K40 and K80 GPUs also fit into the new tray. The new tray has very small differences in some dimensions, and there is a small difference in size between the GPU guides (white plastic) at each end of the trays. K40 and K80 GPUs fit in both original and new trays, but M40 and Pascal GP100 GPUs must use the new tray. Both trays fit into the right and left GPU sleds.
    • Original (first generation) GPU tray - 101154601 K40 / 101192400 K80
    • New (second generation) GPU tray - 101154602 K40 / 101192401 K80/M40/PASCAL
  1. Remove the server cover.
  2. Disconnect the slot 2 and slot 3 IFBs from the GPU sled and left PCI riser assembly.

  3. Loosen 4 captive screws that secure the left GPU sled to the chassis.

  4. Grasp each fan handle, and lift the GPU sled straight out of the chassis, unseating the power connector from the power backplane. Place the GPU sled on an ESD-safe work surface.

  5. Remove 2 screws that secure the GPU tray to the sled.

  6. Pull the handles to remove the GPU tray from the sled.
The GPU tray IFB includes a blind mate power connector that unseats from the PCI riser assembly when the GPU tray is removed.
  7. Disconnect the power connector(s) from the GPU.
  8. Remove NVIDIA GPU:
    1. Remove 2 screws from the small bracket near the power connector.
    2. Remove 2 screws at the opposite end of the tray.
  9. Remove Intel Xeon Phi Coprocessor:
    1. Remove the 2 screws that secure the MIC GPU bracket to the tray.
    2. Remove 2 snap rivets that secure the MIC GPU to the bracket.
