Update the appliance

Image files for appliance updates are available at http://www.hpe.com/info/hpeoneview/updates.

The time required to download the image file depends on the content in the image file and the speed of your network connection.

Prerequisites
  • Privileges: Infrastructure administrator

  • You have created and downloaded a backup file before updating the appliance.

  • If updating from HPE OneView 5.2 or earlier, ensure that no others users are logged in to the appliance and that no one logs in during the update.

  • If updating from HPE OneView 5.3 or newer, ensure that users logged in to the appliance limit the management operations to monitoring, read-only operations, and hardware management operations that take less than a minute for the HPE OneView interaction to complete.

  • You have evaluated health of the HPE Synergy Composer using the HPE OneView Update Readiness Checker.

  • You know about the latest HPE OneView update information. For more information, see HPE OneView Release Notes.

  • You have ensured that the selected version is appropriate to install on the appliance. For more information, see HPE OneView Support Matrix .

  • You have ensured that other users are not logged in to the appliance, and no one logs in during the update.

Procedure
  1. Use a checksum utility of your choice and the .md5 file to verify the integrity of the downloaded update image file.
  2. Download the image file to your local computer. Image files for appliance updates are available at: http://www.hpe.com/info/hpeoneview/updates.
    IMPORTANT:

Select an image file that is compatible with your appliance platform. For information about which image file to download on what operating system, see the HPE OneView Installation Guide.

    NOTE:

When you download the appliance update file, a link to the update HPE OneView Release Notes appears in the Download dialog box. Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends you to click the link to read, save, and print the information for future reference. Once the download starts, you cannot access the link again.

  3. Read the HPE OneView Release Notes to learn about the update. See the HPE OneView Installation Guide to determine version-specific requirements. See the HPE OneView Support Matrix to ensure that the selected version is appropriate to install on the appliance.
  4. Log in to your appliance, select Settings and do one of the following:
    • Click Update appliance in the Appliance panel.

    • Click Appliance. Select Actions > Update appliance.

  5. Use the Select an update image option and do one of the following:
    • Drag the image file from a folder on your local computer and drop it in the box on the Update Appliance screen. Older versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer do not support this method.
    • Click Browse, browse to the image file you downloaded, and select.

  6. Select how to upload, and click Upload (if updating from HPE OneView 5.2 or newer releases) or click Upload and install (if updating from HPE OneView 5.0 or prior releases).
    • Use the Upload the image file and wait for a prompt to install it option to install the update directly after the upload completes.

    • Use the Upload the image file in the background for later installation option to prepare for a later installation. Return to the Update appliance screen and use the Update from uploaded image option when you are ready to perform the update.

The image file is validated as part of the upload. If it is incompatible with the appliance or otherwise cannot be installed, it is deleted from the appliance.

  7. Click to view the End User License Agreement and Written Offer. Review the terms and accept them to continue with the update and click Update.
  8. Click Update to start the update process.

  9. View the status and progress of the update in the progress bar.
    NOTE:

You cannot access the appliance until the update is complete.

  10. Verify the update operation by confirming the firmware version and date in the Settings > Appliance screen.
  11. Back up the appliance after the update.
    NOTE:

After upgrading your appliance, create a backup. If you must restore the appliance, you can only restore from a backup that was created on an appliance with the same version.

If the update is successful, the appliance restarts. After restarting, the appliance returns to the login screen.

If the installation fails, the appliance reverts to its previous state, and then restarts.

The restart does not disrupt the operation of the systems under management, but it does close the management console.
