Licensing scenarios
The way in which the appliance handles license assignments depends on the following:
Whether the enclosure or server hardware has an embedded license.
The license type you choose when you add the enclosure or server hardware.
Whether there are available licenses in the appliance license pool (for server hardware without an embedded license).
There are different considerations to account for when you add, remove, or move server hardware. The following table describes how the appliance handles licensing for different user actions when adding server hardware:
Add User action | License policy or type | Result | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Add managed server hardware with embedded
HPE OneView Advanced or HPE OneView
Advanced w/o iLO license. | Embedded licenses are applied to the server hardware regardless of the license type you selected when adding the server. | Embedded licenses are assigned to the server hardware on which they reside. | |
Add managed server hardware with an existing,
permanent iLO Advanced license. | The license type is set to HPE OneView
Advanced w/o iLO regardless of the license type you
selected when adding the server. | If HPE OneView Advanced w/o iLO licenses available in the pool: The
appliance assigns a license to the server hardware. If no HPE OneView Advanced w/o iLO licenses available in the pool: The appliance issues a warning that there are not enough licenses to satisfy the policy. | |
Add a managed enclosure with embedded HPE
OneView Advanced or HPE OneView Advanced w/o
iLO license. | The embedded license takes precedence over the enclosure license policy you select. | Embedded licenses are added to the appliance pool and applied to server hardware that is not yet licensed. | As the embedded licenses from an enclosure are placed in a pool, these licenses are available to apply to any server managed by the appliance. |
Add a managed enclosure or server hardware with no embedded license. | Any | If licenses available in the pool: The appliance assigns a
license to the server hardware. If no licenses available in the pool: The appliance issues a warning that there are not enough licenses to satisfy the policy. | After the 60-day trial period, a message notifies you when there are not enough licenses for the number of managed server hardware. |
Add a managed enclosure with HPE ProLiant G6 or HPE ProLiant BL680 G7 servers. | Any | The G6/G7 servers use an HPE OneView Standard license,
while the other servers are assigned the HPE OneView
Advanced or HPE OneView Advanced w/o
iLO license you specified. | |
Add enclosure to monitor the hardware | All the supported server hardware in the enclosure
uses an HPE OneView Standard license. | HPE OneView Standard license is
automatically used when adding an enclosure for monitoring the
hardware. | Embedded licenses on monitored server hardware are ignored. |
The following table describes how the appliance handles licensing when server hardware is removed from the appliance:
Remove user action | License policy or type | Result | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Remove managed server hardware | HPE OneView Advanced (license applied to server
hardware) | The license remains assigned to the server hardware. | If the server hardware is readded, it is assigned to the same license. Removing server hardware with licenses assigned to them can cause the number of licensed servers shown in the licensing graphs to be greater than the number of servers currently being managed because the licenses are still being counted as assigned to server hardware. |
Remove managed server hardware. | HPE OneView Advanced w/o iLO or HPE OneView Advanced
(when license not yet applied to server) | The license is unassigned from the server hardware. | |
Remove a monitored enclosure or server hardware | HPE OneView Standard | The server hardware is not using the license. |
If you want to move a licensed server to a new appliance, ensure that the license key it is using is first moved to the new appliance. The following table describes the required steps and considerations for different move scenarios:
Move Scenario | Required steps | Result | Additional considerations |
---|---|---|---|
Move managed server hardware using | Before moving the server to the new appliance, ensure that the license key used by the server is first added to the new appliance. Use the REST API to determine the key a server is assigned to. See the HPE OneView API Reference for more information. | The same license is applied to the server on the new appliance. | The original appliance continues to consume the license for the server. If the license key has a capacity greater than 1, you have to monitor any overallocation between the multiple appliances sharing the same license key. |
Move managed server hardware using HPE
OneView Advanced w/o iLO license (nonembedded license). | Before moving the server to the new appliance, ensure that the license key used by the server is first added to the new appliance. Use the REST API to determine the key a server is assigned to. See the HPE OneView API Reference for more information. | A license is assigned to the server on the new appliance. | You must remove the license key from the original appliance as HPE OneView might use it for another server. If the license key has a capacity greater than 1, you cannot remove it if another server is assigned to the license. You have to monitor any overallocation between the multiple appliances sharing the same license key. |
Move managed server hardware with embedded license. | None | As the license is embedded on the server, it is added and assigned to the server on the new appliance. | For an HPE OneView Advanced license,
the original appliance continues to have the license applied to the
server. For an HPE OneView Advanced w/o iLO
license, you must remove the license key from the original appliance
as HPE OneView might use it for
another server. |
