HPE once again positioned in the 2022 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for Primary Storage
Gartner has recognized HPE as a Leader in Primary Storage for our Completeness of Vision and Ability to Execute
- The HPE Storage vision – and the way we are executing it – means the elimination of the complexity for our customers
- Our data infrastructure is the foundation on which our block storage, disaster recovery and data protection services are built
For the last four years, Gartner has recognized HPE as a Leader in Primary Storage for our Completeness of Vision and Ability to Execute. This means that every year since Gartner introduced the Primary Storage report, HPE has been in the Leaders quadrant.

We believe the foundation of this recognition is our strategy for enabling hybrid IT operations by bringing a cloud operational model to customers’ data, enabling protection, security and compliance across hybrid cloud environments.
Our Vision
For modern enterprises, data has become an organization’s most important asset. It is our vision to accelerate customers’ IT modernization journeys while reducing data management complexity and delivering the cloud operational experience.
Fulfilling this vision means offering primary storage in a model that radically simplifies and automates storage operations, enabling IT to meet ever-increasing business needs while delivering the self-service agility it takes to go faster.
Our data infrastructure is the foundation on which our block storage, disaster recovery and data protection services are built. These services are then delivered to customers on the HPE GreenLake platform for a unified cloud experience that is uniquely AI-driven through HPE InfoSight. This allows us to make underlying data infrastructure invisible and shift operations from infrastructure-focused to an app-focused model.
Whether these offerings are software-as-a-service only, like our data protection services, or infrastructure-as-a-service offerings that include hardware and software, the solutions are powered by our cloud-native, cloud-first primary storage solutions.
Our vision is to bring enhanced cloud data services with self-service agility and a cloud operational experience to customers, wherever their data and workloads live.
Execution
We started talking in 2021 about our vision for the future of storage and since then we have been working diligently to bring this vision to life.
Last year we introduced HPE Alletra, a new portfolio of cloud-native data infrastructure that powers data from edge to cloud. The HPE Alletra 9000 supports mission-critical workloads with a 100% data availability guarantee, while the HPE Alletra 6000 supports business-critical applications. Now, with the recently introduced HPE Alletra 5000, we have added a hybrid array to our portfolio to give customers the flexibility to optimize their storage operations. Additionally, we are now offering all of our Storage solutions in an outcomes-based, SLA-driven model, where customers choose the key service parameters for their desired SLA and we deliver the solutions that meet their need. This allows customers to get exactly the data management infrastructure they need, without over provisioning (and overspending).
As we shift to a data-first world, our Storage offerings with HPE GreenLake free up time and power faster data storage deployments for application workloads. This is an important step in our Storage transformation journey – one that sets us apart and directly benefits our customers.
As an example of this, HPE customer Asante Health now has a secure, flexible, and simplified platform for its most critical environment. “We can now do more as a team,” Michael York, Senior System Engineer, Asante says. “This has helped us to continue focusing on what really matters. Our data matters to us. Data stays in our data center as opposed to having to compute around it elsewhere.”
Additionally, our powerful primary storage solutions enable cloud infrastructure services and cloud data services that allow customers to achieve efficiency and modernization in their data management. For example, HPE GreenLake for Data Protection services, like HPE GreenLake for Disaster Recovery and HPE Backup and Recovery Service, provide security with continuous data protection as seamless extensions to primary storage solutions. This recovery experience unlocks the power for customers to confront ransomware head-on as they secure data from edge to cloud, in one platform with unlimited scale. With disaster-recovery technology from Zerto, an HPE company, we help customers resume operations and recover to a state just prior to a disaster or ransomware attack, in minutes and at scale.
One of the factors that has been impacting our ability to execute – and this is not unique to HPE – is the global supply chain. There are lingering impacts from supply chain issues that originated in 2020 and have been affecting our business. We have been actively working to manage the situation and improve our resilience against future supply chain interruptions.
As supply chain issues are being resolved and we get more products into the marketplace, we are seeing great traction with some of our new product introductions, as we are able to deliver against a pent-up demand. The HPE Alletra 5000 is a great example of this and the demand from our customers is another indicator of our ability.
The HPE Storage vision – and the way we are executing it – means the elimination of the complexity that normally comes with managing and operating storage hardware, software and cloud infrastructure. We believe that with our enhanced data experience and our winning primary storage components that bring our cloud operational model to life, it’s no wonder we are recognized as a Leader for the fourth year in a row.
Thanks go to our customers for trusting us with their business and our partners for being a part of the journey. And to our product and engineering teams – without which this recognition would not be possible.
