Four things to know about the 2022 Living Progress Report

Sustainability is inextricably linked to our business strategy and everything we do. Today we are releasing our eighth annual Living Progress Report that outlines our progress and new goals towards creating sustainable and responsible technology solutions – a means of transparency for all of our stakeholders. Our hope is that by continuing to set measurable goals backed with actionable plans to achieve them, we can make real and impactful progress towards our environment, social, and governance objectives. Here are four things you need to know about the report. 

1. HPE is progressing on our commitment to become a net-zero enterprise across our value chain. In 2022, HPE made the ambitious decision to accelerate our commitment to become a net-zero enterprise across our value chain by a decade to 2040 in order to act with urgency to address the climate crisis. Our commitment—and supporting suite of targets toward this goal—align with climate science, making HPE one of just two global tech companies with a 2040 net-zero target approved by the Science-based Target Initiative. Our journey to net-zero begins with reducing emissions within our own control, primarily through energy reduction and the transition to low carbon solutions. In just two years, HPE’s operational (Scope 1 & 2) emissions decreased 21% from our 2020 baseline, toward our target of 70% of 2030. To achieve this, we surpassed our 2025 target of sourcing 50% renewable electricity three years ahead of schedule.

2. HPE as a Service (aaS) offerings help organizations digitally transform and modernize sustainably. Over decades we have focused on the environmental impacts of our solutions and have built one of the most innovative Sustainable IT portfolios.  Along with our expertise and services, our holistic solutions aim to lower the carbon impact of IT, reducing energy consumption and optimizing utilization while delivering speed and performance.  HPE GreenLake –the centerpiece of our edge to cloud strategy, enables customers to consume IT on an as-a-service basis, enabling them to flexibly scale their IT to meet their needs and reducing IT inefficiencies which are a significant source of environmental impacts within many companies.  HPE is continually innovating and recently announced the preview of a new sustainability dashboard on the HPE GreenLake edge-to-cloud platform and a comprehensive portfolio of sustainability services designed to help organizations reduce the carbon footprint associated with their IT estates.  In addition, in June 2022, 96 HPE systems made the Green 500 list of the world’s most energy efficient supercomputers, with Frontier coming in as #1. 

We also help customers benefit from the circular economy and give technology that would otherwise be discarded a new life. Over the last three years, HPE Financial Services returned to active use more than 3.1 million personal computers, 2.4 million servers and compute assets, and 800,000 storage devices. In 2022, HPE Technology Renewal Centers processed ~3.6 million IT assets, remarketing 82% for a second life.

3. Maintaining our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. We are committed to being an unconditionally inclusive workplace where everyone is respected. HPE continues to advance principles of diversity, equity and inclusion both within its workforce and beyond. In 2022, 50% of our board members identified with one or more diverse groups and found that 96% of team members reported feeling respected at HPE. In addition, we met our goal of increasing the representation of ethnically diverse talent by 1 percentage point year-over-year, and 36.3% of US promotions were earned by ethnically diverse team members, which is four percentage points higher than overall representation. HPE also achieved its goal, for the 2^nd year in a row, of increasing representation of women in executive roles (director level and above) by at least 1 percentage point.

4. We operate with integrity. HPE continues to demonstrate that we are a trusted supplier and partner helping companies advance solutions that make big ideas possible. In 2022 we launched three new supply chain responsibility targets related to worker training, worker voice, and no recruitment fee and reached 235,533 workers in our supply chain through our monitoring programs. HPE’s commitment to ethical business practices has been recognized globally through rankings and awards by several reputable organizations including:

• Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) #2 in our industry
• EcoVadis Platinum recognition (top 1%)
• Ethisphere’s World’s Most Ethical Companies for the 5^th consecutive year
• JUST100 – #1 in our industry, #7 overall
• MSCI – AAA score, 96^th percentile
