“Every year it is our pleasure to connect with and honor the HPC community through our Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards, and 2021 marked an exceptional showing of industry innovation,” said Tom Tabor, CEO of Tabor Communications, publisher of HPCwire. “Between our worldwide readership of HPC experts and an unparalleled panel of editors, the Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards represent resounding recognition throughout the industry. Our congratulations go out to all of the winners.”

The awards recognize HPE for the following achievements:

  • Top 5 Vendors to Watch Editors’ Choice Award

  • Best HPC Storage Product or Technology Editors’ Choice Award: HPE’s Cray ClusterStor E1000 storage system, which is used in a number of supercomputers, was recognized by HPCwire’s editors for best HPC storage product of the year. The Cray ClusterStor E1000 is purposely-engineered to support the exascale era, which represents a new generation of data insights that can only be harnessed with next-generation technologies made for exascale-class systems that are up to 10 times faster than today’s most powerful supercomputers. The offering delivers expanded storage, with intelligent tiering capabilities, to support and share complex workloads in modeling, simulation, AI, machine learning and analytics.

  • Best HPC Response to Societal Plight (Urgent Computing) Editors’ Choice Award: HPE was recognized for powering Pittsburgh Supercomputing Centre’s Bridges and Bridges-2 systems, which use the HPE Apollo systems, to simulate storm effects on Louisiana’s coast. A team of government, industry and academic scientists worked alongside the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) and Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority to generate simulations that help underlie Louisiana’s 2023 Coastal Master Plan, which aims to reduce storm surge-based flood risk to communities.

  • Top Supercomputing Achievement Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards: HPE built the Perlmutter supercomputer for the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), part of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, as one of the first supercomputers to use the HPE Cray EX system, which is designed to power next-generation supercomputing such as with exascale. NERSC’s Perlmutter has a powerful set of HPC and AI capabilities to help scientists create 3D models of the universe, along with tackling other complex scientific research. Perlmutter was recognized as the world’s fifth-fastest supercomputer and was also ranked third place on delivering a leading High Performance Conjugate Gradients (HPCG) benchmark, which is a benchmark designed to apply computational and data access patterns to a set of applications, enabling users to support needs across mixed scientific workloads.
