Update the HPE Synergy Composer appliance

IMPORTANT:

Never perform any management operations while the appliances are being updated. You can continue to use the monitoring features of the appliance which are read-only operations, but do not perform the following operations:

  • Changes to the physical hardware configuration, such as adding or removing hardware, changing the cabling, and so on.

  • Changes to the appliance settings such as networking, security, time, and so on.

  • Actions that change the state of the appliance, such as, restart, remove standby, shut down, factory reset, update, and create support dump. These changes may cause disruptions and can introduce errors preventing a successful update.

  • Actions that include applying, editing, or removing the server profiles.

Prerequisites
  • Privileges: Infrastructure administrator

  • If updating from HPE OneView 5.20 or earlier versions, ensure that no other users are logged in to the appliance and that no one logs in during the update.

  • If updating from HPE OneView 5.30 or later versions, ensure that users logged in to the appliance limit the management operations to monitoring or read-only operations.

  • You have completed the preupdate tasks, and have already downloaded the update image.

  • Make sure you have read and understand the concepts described in Software and firmware update process.

Procedure
  1. Log in to your appliance.
  2. From the main menu, select Settings and do one of the following:
    • In the Appliance panel, click Update appliance.

    • Click Appliance, and select Actions > Update appliance.

  3. Select Select an update image, and do one of the following:
    • Drag and drop the update.bin image file from a folder on your local computer to the Update Appliance screen. Older versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer do not support this method.
    • Click Browse to locate and select the update.bin image file you downloaded.

  4. Select either one of the following:
    • Upload the image file and wait for a prompt to install it — Select to initiate the update shortly after the upload completes.

    • Upload the image file in the background for later installation — Select to upload the file, and initiate the update later. When you are ready to perform the update, return to the Update appliance screen. Select Update from uploaded image to perform the update.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends uploading the image file and immediately installing the update, so that not too much time passes between the preupdate tasks and the actual update. If you choose to perform the upload later, make sure your appliances are still idle before triggering the update.

    NOTE:

You will not be able to run the HPE OneView Update Readiness Checker once an appliance update image has been uploaded.

Once uploaded, the image file is validated. If the file is incompatible with the appliance or cannot be installed, an error message is displayed and the file is deleted from the appliance. Correct the problem with the file and retry the operation. If the file was incompatible, try downloading a different file from the Hewlett Packard Enterprise site.

  5. If you are updating from HPE OneView 5.20 or later versions, click Upload. If you are updating from HPE OneView 5.00 or earlier versions, click Upload and install.
  6. Click End User License Agreement, and click Written Offer to review the terms. Select I have read and accept the terms in the license agreement, and then click Update.
    NOTE:

During the update, do not manually reboot or shut down the appliance. An interruption may be unrecoverable, requiring appliance data to be restored from the backup.

  7. Optional. If updating from HPE OneView 5.30 or later versions, click Learn more to view the considerations for updating the HPE OneView appliance.
  8. Click Yes, update to start the update process.
  9. Monitor the update progress in the Activity screen or in the Settings > Activity screen. Locate the Update appliance task, and click the expand icon to inspect the details.
