ESD Precautions

Observe electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautions during the entire removal and installation process. Required apparel includes an ESD smock and an ESD wrist-strap, or ESD shoes. The use of ESD shoes requires that the work area and floor are designed to dissipate a static charge.
CAUTION:
  • ESD Precautions
  • Observe all ESD precautions. Failure to do so can result in equipment damage.
ESD Smock
Wear a Cray approved static-dissipative smock when you service or handle or are within 18 inches of an ESD-sensitive device. Completely button the smock and wear it as the outermost layer of clothing. You must have a portion of the smock’s sleeves in direct contact with the skin of your arms. Skin contact is essential for a dissipative path-to-earth ground through your wrist strap or ESD shoes. Tuck hair that exceeds shoulder length inside the back of the smock.
ESD Shoes
ESD shoes or ESD heel straps can be used in lieu of an ESD wrist strap when handling ESD-sensitive devices if the work area and floor are designed to dissipate a static charge.
ESD Wrist Straps
Wear an ESD wrist strap that is connected to a known earth ground when handling ESD-sensitive devices. Alternatively, ESD shoes can be used if the work area and floor are designed to dissipate a static charge.

Safety Precautions

Personnel handing this equipment must be trained to follow these instructions. They are responsible for determining if additional requirements are necessary under applicable workplace safety laws and regulations.

Electrical safety precautions should be followed to protect personnel from harm and the equipment from damage.

Power should always be disconnected when removing or installing server chassis and main system components.
