Removing and replacing the processor

Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends identifying the processor, heatsink, and socket components before performing this procedure.

CAUTION: To prevent possible server malfunction and damage to the equipment, multiprocessor configurations must contain processors with the same part number.
CAUTION: THE CONTACTS ARE VERY FRAGILE AND EASILY DAMAGED. To avoid damage to the socket or processor, do not touch the contacts.
Prerequisites

Before you perform this procedure, make sure that you have the following items available:

  • T-30 Torx screwdriver

  • 1/4" flat-bladed screwdriver

  • Thermal grease

  • Heatsink processor assembly

Procedure
  1. Power down the server blade.
  2. Remove the server blade from the chassis.
  3. Remove the top cover.
  4. Remove the air baffle.
  5. Remove the processor heatsink assembly.
  6. Using an alcohol wipe, remove the existing thermal grease.
Allow solvent to dry before being contact with thermal grease.
  7. Separate the processor from the heatsink:
    1. Locate the release slot between the frame and heatsink.
The release slot is across from the Pin 1 indicator and is labeled with a screwdriver.
    2. Insert a 1/4" flathead screwdriver into the release slot.
Be sure that the screwdriver is between the plastic frame and the heatsink.
    3. To lift the processor frame away from the heatsink, slowly rotate the screwdriver.

    4. Unlatch the remaining corners of the frame.
    5. Separate the frame from the heatsink.

To replace the processor:

  1. If reusing an existing heatsink, apply new thermal grease to the processor in the following pattern shown.

    Applying thermal grease

If installing a new heatsink, the thermal grease is preapplied.

  2. Replace the processor assembly on the heatsink:
    1. Align the pin 1 indicator on the processor to the pin 1 indicator on the heatsink.
    2. Install the processor on the heatsink and ensure that all the latches are engaged with the heatsink.

  3. Install the processor heatsink assembly:
    1. Locate and align the Pin 1 indicator on the processor frame and the socket.
    2. Align the processor heatsink assembly with the heatsink alignment posts and gently lower it down until it sits evenly on the socket.
The heatsink alignment posts are keyed. The processor will only install one way.

A standard heatsink is shown, your heatsink might look different.

CAUTION: Be sure to tighten each heatsink nut fully in the order indicated. Otherwise, boot failure or intermittent shutdowns might occur.
    3. Using a T-30 Torx screwdriver, tighten the nuts until they stop.
  4. Install the air baffle.
  5. Install the top cover.
  6. Install the server blade in the chassis.
  7. Power up the server blade.
