Update firmware with a server profile

Prerequisites
  • Privileges: Infrastructure administrator or Server administrator

  • For Gen10 servers, if you choose Firmware and Operating System (OS) Drivers using Smart Update Tools or Firmware only using Smart Update Tools installation method, ensure that the following minimum version of the Integrated Smart Update Tools is installed and configured with the iLO credentials:
    • High security mode: SUT 2.1.0.0 or later.

    • FIPS mode: SUT 2.2.0.0 or later.

    • CNSA mode: SUT 2.4.0.0 or later.

For additional information on configuring SUT with iLO credentials, see Integrated Smart Update Tools for Windows, Linux, and VMware ESXi at Smart Update Tools Information Library.
  • For updating iLO 5 firmware to version 2.10 or later, the iLO firmware must be first updated to version 1.40. During a firmware update, when a firmware baseline containing version 2.10 or later is applied to a server, HPE OneView automatically updates iLO 5 firmware to version 1.40, and then to the selected version in the firmware bundle (for example, iLO 5 firmware version 2.10 or later). Thus, the iLO is updated twice, automatically.
Procedure
  1. Edit the existing server profile or create and apply a server profile.
    1. Select the Firmware baseline.

If the selected firmware baseline is older than the firmware currently installed, you will need to select the Force installation option to downgrade the firmware. You might want to install older firmware if the newer firmware already installed on the server is known to cause a problem in your environment, perhaps as noted in the Release Notes.

    2. Optional: Schedule firmware updates from a server profile.
  2. To complete the update, do one of the following:
    1. If this is a new profile, click Create to create the server profile.
    2. If you are editing an existing profile, click OK to update the server profile.
  3. Power on the server to activate the firmware.
    1. From the main menu, select Server Hardware.
    2. Select the server and then select Actions > Power on.
  4. Verify that the new firmware baseline is listed in the details pane on the Server Profiles screen.
    NOTE:
    • During a server hardware firmware update, HPE OneView silences certain alerts that are expected as part of the update. These alerts include server power transitions and iLO resets. Most of these alerts automatically clear before the completion of the update. You can view details of the remaining alerts in the server activity panel.

    • When you apply a firmware baseline to a server by creating or editing server profile, the validation checks ensures that the selected baseline contains the firmware applicable to the server generation and model. If the validation check fails, then an error message is displayed.
