Updating Innovation Engine (IE) and/or Server Platform Service (SPS) firmware

This procedure is for update of the Innovation Engine (IE) firmware and/or the Server Platform Service (SPS) firmware in the Gen10 server blade using the iLO web interface.

IMPORTANT:

The server blade must be powered on and rebooted after updating the IE firmware and before updating the SPS firmware. Failure to reboot the server between the IE firmware update and the SPS firmware update will cause the server blade to be unable to boot. This condition cannot then be recovered without a factory service procedure.

NOTE:
  • This procedure uses the .bin format IE and SPS firmware image files in the NSC DVD for L20.05 and later RVUs. The NSC DVD for L19.08 has .fwpkg format IE and SPS firmware image files instead of the .bin format files. The .fwpkg format files require a separate download of the iLO RESTful Interface Tool to perform the firmware update. The .bin format files in the NSC DVD for L20.05 and later RVUs do not require the iLO RESTful Interface Tool. Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends using the .bin format IE and SPS firmware image files instead of the .fwpkg format files.

  • If updating both IE firmware and SPS firmware, update the IE firmware before updating the SPS firmware.

Procedure
  1. Power off the server blade:
    1. From the iLO web interface, navigate to the Power & Thermal page, and then click Press and Hold to force power off the server blade.
  2. Navigate to the Remote Console & Media page and open an iLO Remote Console to monitor the server blade boot progress later in the firmware update procedure.
  3. Navigate to the Firmware & OS Software page.
  4. Click Upload to iLO Repository in right side pane, then click Browse and enter location of the firmware image file in the File box. If the NSC has been updated with the NSC DVD, the firmware image files are located in the \C: Non-SUT Firmware \Lyy.xx FW folder, where Lyy.xx is the RVU identifier.
  5. To upload the firmware image file to the iLO Repository, click the Upload button.
  6. After iLO indicates that firmware upload is completed, click the iLO Repository tab in the middle pane.
  7. Click the Install Component icon to the left of the Trash icon. Then click the Yes… button to confirm and begin the firmware update. The Yes… button can state install now or add to the end of the queue. Either button will begin the firmware update if the server blade had been powered off in Step 1.

The IE firmware update takes 3 to 4 minutes to complete.

The SPS firmware update takes 7 to 8 minutes to complete.

  8. After iLO indicates that firmware update is completed, navigate to the Power & Thermal page and click Momentary Press to power on and reboot the server blade. As noted previously, this step must be done after each IE or SPS firmware update.
  9. If updating both IE firmware and SPS firmware, repeat this procedure to update the SPS firmware after first updating the IE firmware. If the iLO Remote Console is open, wait for the server blade to boot in the preceding step until the status message "Booting in Legacy BIOS mode..." is displayed at the top of the Remote Console window before repeating Step 1 to power off the server blade for the SPS firmware update.
  10. If adding a server blade, see core license instructions in Step 9.
