Prepare for installation
Prerequisites
Read Cautions and notes before performing the installation.
Procedure
- Unpack the FRU and inspect it for damage. Do not install a damaged FRU.
- Verify that you have obtained the tools and documentation in Verification Checklist.
-
Using the OSM Service Connection, verify that no other processor in the system is in a halted state. If other processors are halted, take steps to ensure that this replacement procedure does not cause an application outage.
For information on using the Multi-Resource Actions dialog box to check the state of logical processors, see the OSM Service Connection online help.
- Use the OSM Suppress Problem Incident Report Creation action on the system object to prevent unnecessary dial-out communications related to the removal of the FRU.
-
If you are adding a server blade, skip to
Remove and install the server blade.
If you are replacing a server blade, continue with step 6. Later in this procedure you will be prompted to use the OSM System Configuration Tool.
-
Using the OSM Service Connection, check whether the affected Logical Processor displays
Running NSK under the Processor State (from ME Unit) attribute. If Running NSK is displayed:
- Advise the customer to switch or quiesce any applications with processes running in the affected processor.
- Check whether the primary OSM server process is running in the affected processor:
> SCF STATUS PROCESS $ZZKRN.#OSM-CIMOM
If the OSM server process is running, you must perform extra steps after you halt the processor.
- Use the Multi-Resource Actions dialog box to perform a
Disable Processor Freeze action on any logical processors that have a
Processor Freeze State of
Enabled
.
-
Turn on the UID LEDs to help locate the FRU to be replaced:
- If an Onboard Administrator (OA) firmware update has been performed, clear the cache in the Internet Explorer browser to avoid any problems associated with a previously performed Onboard Administrator (OA) firmware update: Tools > Internet Options > Delete Files.
- Use the OSM Launch the Onboard Administrator action on the enclosure resource to launch the OA web browser interface. The Rack Overview screen appears.
- Click Device Bays in the left pane.
- Click the server blade to be replaced. The Device Bay Information screen appears.
- Click the Virtual Devices tab.
- Click Toggle On/Off to turn on the server blade's UID LED.
NOTE:Do not exit the OA interface until you have completed this procedure.
- Connect to the affected server using the OSM System Startup Tool. Leave the OSM System Startup Tool connected during the replacement procedure.
-
Use OSM to halt the associated processor if possible. If it is not possible to do this using the OSM Service Connection, try the System Startup Tool.
For information about halting processors, see the OSM online help.
-
If you determined that the primary OSM server process was running in the affected processor:
- Close the OSM Service Connection application.
- Wait five minutes.
- Open the OSM Service Connection application. The primary OSM server process will have switched to its backup processor.
